Affordable Basic Computers

As part of TAG-Org's social responsibility efforts, TAG-BOOK comes as a farsighted initiative that gives hope for the underprivileged in the Arab world for accessing information technology. Launched with the endorsement of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), TAG-BOOK runs an effective business model that makes available laptop computers at affordable prices for the Arab underprivileged communities.

Moved by alarmingly low PC penetration rates in the Arab countries, Mr. Talal Abu Ghazalah, chairman of Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organization, called for establishing a business model that incorporates a complex yet effective set of elements. Keys to the success of this business model include the production of low-cost laptop computers, development of basic Arabized software, providing services to interested businesses; all this coupled with creating official and grassroots support through governments, NGO's, educational institutes, etc., in order to foster the dissemination of information technology.

"It will be interesting to accelerate the utilization of laptops in the Arab region through TAG-BOOK, and create a digitally-enabled generation" says Wael Nabhani, Project Manager of Tag-book. "We need to push for an average of 16 million personal computers purchased annually, just so that we can catch up with the world PC penetration rates. We're that much behind", he added.
TAG-BOOK remains as a highly ambitious project which helps create and sustain momentum for millions of potential users throughout the Arab region to access information technology.
